These Retro Video Games Would Work Well As a Reboot

4 min read

Retro gaming nostalgia is stronger than ever, but true reboots, bold reimagining’s rather than simple remasters, are still rare. Some classics don’t just deserve updated graphics, they deserve to be rebuilt from the ground up for modern audiences. Titles like Chrono Trigger, Metal Gear, EarthBound, Power Stone, and The Simpsons: Hit & Run aren’t just beloved, they’re packed with untapped potential that today’s technology could fully realize. Now, please note, these games that I have mentioned are not my top five games that deserve a reboot.  These are just some games that definitely made my list of deserving of a reboot and would be a successful task.

Chrono Trigger

Few RPGs are as universally respected as Chrono Trigger. Its time-travel narrative, multiple endings, and innovative dual- and triple-tech combat systems still feel fresh decades later. Not to mention, this game still holds a heavy price whether it’s a loose cartridge or complete in box.  This game is not only a legendary RPG of its time, but it also set the precedence for good RPG gaming.  A reboot could expand each time period into deeper, more explorable worlds while preserving the tight pacing that made the original special. Imagine seamless era transitions, modern cinematic storytelling, and a reworked battle system that blends strategic depth with dynamic movement. The emotional core- friendship, sacrifice, and consequence- would resonate just as powerfully today. This type of in-depth reimaging is something that the younger gamers could get with and the older gamers would respect.

Metal Gear

Before stealth-action became a genre staple, Metal Gear pioneered the concept of avoiding combat rather than charging into it. A reboot of the original 1987 title could strip things back to tactical infiltration and survival tension. Modern AI systems could create unpredictable guards, reactive environments, and emergent gameplay scenarios. Instead of leaning fully into blockbuster spectacle, a grounded reboot could emphasize strategy, resourcefulness, and psychological tension. Thus, reintroducing the series at its roots while appealing to contemporary stealth fans. Such as, myself.

EarthBound

EarthBound remains one of gaming’s most charming and unconventional RPGs. Its suburban setting, surreal humor, and emotional sincerity feel tailor-made for today’s indie-driven gaming culture. Perfection, right? A reboot could maintain its stylized aesthetic while enhancing environmental storytelling and character animations. Streamlined combat and quality-of-life improvements would make it more accessible without losing its quirky soul. In an era where players embrace heartfelt, offbeat narratives, EarthBound could thrive far beyond its original cult following. And a lot of people feel like this game was overhyped, perhaps a reboot could

finally settle that debate.

Power Stone

Arena fighters are primed for a comeback, and Power Stone was ahead of its time. Its fast-paced, item-based 3D battles felt chaotic in the best way. A modern reboot could feature interactive, destructible arenas, expanded character rosters, and robust online multiplayer. With today’s physics engines and competitive gaming infrastructure, Power Stone could evolve into a party-game phenomenon while also carving out a serious esports niche. Its accessible mechanics and explosive transformations are perfect for modern audiences. And I know this for a fact because while having casual conversations about reboots, remakes, and remasters, Power Stone is a game that is always mentioned to be deserving of something.

The Simpsons: Hit & Run

Few licensed games are remembered as fondly as The Simpsons: Hit & Run. Essentially a comedic open-world adventure set in Springfield, it blended satire, exploration, and mission-based chaos. A reboot could transform Springfield into a fully realized open world packed with side quests, hidden jokes, and character-driven storylines. With updated driving mechanics and a sharp, modern script that captures the show’s wit, it could appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers alike.  To me, this game is a no-brainer.  We definitely need to bring this one back.

Reboots succeed when they respect what made the original special while embracing modern design philosophies. These five games share one thing in common: their core ideas remain strong. With today’s technology, storytelling tools, and online capabilities, they wouldn’t just relive past glory, they could redefine their genres all over again.  And especially in today’s world where everything is modernizing, this is a fantastic way to relive and bring back these classics to life.
